4 Home Mindfulness Activities You Can Try Today

Feeling stressed out and anxious about the future? Let go of your worries, and try focusing on the things within your control. Here are four home mindfulness activities that you can try today for more positive outlook.

Start the day with a sense of Gratitude

Adopting an attitude of gratitude mindset has positive effects on health according to psychologists. Clinical trials have shown that the practice of gratitude can reduce stress, improve mood, and boost both mental and physical conditions.

What are the qualities of gratitude, and how can it be applied it to everyday lives? Robert A. Emmons, Ph.D., professor of psychology at UC Davis and author of “The Little Book of Gratitude”, describes gratitude as an affirmation of the goodness in the world and the recognition that its source involves external factors. Habits like keeping a journal and writing down things we are thankful for each day is a way for us to acknowledge the positive impact of other people and the environment to our lives. As you write, be specific and make sure to express how you feel.

Another way is to say thank you to those who have done something nice for you. You can do this verbally, thru a written message, or even mentally. Showing appreciation for a person not only improves your disposition, it also fosters and nurtures genuine relationships.

Develop a routine, and be open to new learning

By setting a schedule and coming up with a task list, we are able to channel our energies to things that are within our control. And crossing-out items on our to-dos, provides a sense of accomplishment that can motivate us on becoming even more productive.

Allotting time for new learning also provides opportunities for us to create better versions of ourselves. Reading a good book can give us more depth and provide new insights. There are also a lot of free webinars and online courses that can widen our knowledge and hone our skills.

Support worthy causes and local businesses

A lot of individuals have ventured to online selling as a source of income, like selling food, fruits, and household needs. Social media has provided them a platform to market their products. By supporting their small businesses, you are helping them sustain their everyday needs.

But there are also those affected who do not have the same resources. And struggle to cope with the new normal. Participating in donation drives and advocacy groups, or simply extending random acts of kindness can go a long way.

Doing good also makes us feel good based on scientific studies. After doing a good deed, our bodies release feel-good endorphins that can improve mental and physical health. This is also known as the “Helper’s High”.

Pursue a healthier lifestyle

Our bodies are our first line of defense against infections. And including nutritious food to our diet like vegetables and fruits, regular exercise, and ample sleep are natural ways of strengthening our immune system.

Controlled breathing is also a method that reduces stress, and restores our state of balance. Try to lie down with your hands on your belly, breathe in to the count of five and exhale to the count to six. Repeat this for 10 to 20 minutes a day.

Lastly, living in a community with greener surroundings, more open spaces for recreation, and that has easy access to essentials, provide benefits to our health and wellness. Carefully planned living spaces encourage residents to stay active and connected, and allow them to experience a fuller and better life.
